Doyle and Spain Books in Order

Doyle and Spain is Josh Lanyon doing wartime noir. The series follows Nathan Doyle, a reporter back from World War II, and Matthew Spain, a homicide detective, in Los Angeles during the 1940s. That setting matters from the first page. The city is full of glamour, rationing, gossip, fear, and the sense that everyone is carrying more than they say.

Doyle is a journalist, which means he pokes at things for a living and is rarely as careful as a detective would prefer. Spain is a detective, which means he is professionally suspicious and not always delighted to find Doyle near his crime scenes. Put them together and the stories get exactly the right kind of friction.

The noir mood is a big part of the charm. These are books with cigarettes, train cars, hotels, headlines, and the nervous aftertaste of war. The mysteries may involve murder, blackmail, old scandals, or chance encounters that turn ugly fast, but underneath all of that is the question of what kind of life two men like Doyle and Spain can build in that place and time.

Lanyon is very good with this sort of historical pressure. The attraction is real, but so are the reasons for caution. That gives the romance a different texture than in her contemporary work. Everything feels a little more dangerous, a little more private, and sometimes a little more tender for having to be hidden.

If you like classic crime atmosphere, sharp dialogue, and history used as more than wallpaper, Doyle and Spain is a lovely series to sink into.
