Their escape route is a service tunnel and a door that should not be there. On the other side is Down, a broad, dangerous world of shorelines, grasslands, old roads, strange weather, and rules nobody has explained to the newcomers.

The first book, Down Station, follows the survivors as they try to stay together long enough to understand where they are. Down is not a simple fantasy realm. It has received refugees from different Londons over many centuries, and it seems to be made from the city's stories, memories, myths, and unfinished business. Familiar names and places turn up in altered forms, while the geography itself feels both huge and unstable.

Mary and Dalip become two of the key figures in the group. They are not chosen heroes who arrive prepared for adventure. The story expands the scale of the world without losing the close-up worries of people trying to protect one another.
