The Method Framework for Engineering System Architectures
by Donald Firesmith
2008
Firesmith and his coauthors present a framework for building project-specific methods for system architecture work. It is aimed at architects and process engineers who need a disciplined way to plan tasks, work products, and quality concerns.
Security And Safety Requirements For Software Intensive Systems
by Donald Firesmith
2011
This technical guide focuses on the hard job of defining safety and security requirements for software-intensive systems. It connects requirements work with hazards, threats, and the decisions needed to make complex systems more dependable.
Common System and Software Testing Pitfalls
by Donald Firesmith

The Simulation Theory of Consciousness
by Donald Firesmith
2019
Firesmith argues that systems which build and run real-time simulations of themselves and their surroundings are conscious in a meaningful sense. It is a compact, provocative look at AI, sentience, and why even autonomous vehicles might count.
Future Dreams and Nightmares
by Donald Firesmith
2023
This collection gathers science fiction stories about memory, AI, time travel, climate catastrophe, and other near-future dilemmas. Each piece plays with big ideas while keeping the human cost close at hand.

Author bio
Donald Firesmith was born in Oklahoma City in 1952, and for much of his working life he built a career that looked more like engineering than publishing. He studied mathematics and German at Linfield College, spent a year studying in Munich, then earned a master's in mathematics at Arizona State University. That mix of numbers, language, and curiosity shows up all through his books.
He started working in the computer business in 1979 and went on to jobs as a software developer, quality engineer, configuration manager, and data manager in the United States, Germany, and Switzerland. Over more than four decades, he became known for system and software engineering, wrote several technical books, and published nearly 300 articles, tutorials, and conference papers. In 2015, the Association for Computing Machinery named him a Distinguished Member.
Then he made a late turn into fiction.
That shift makes sense once you see how his interests line up. He likes science, technology, travel, and big questions, and he brings all of that into stories that ask what if without floating away from the real world. He has said he leans on science, technology, and military advisers so the non-speculative parts feel believable.
His first novel, What Lurks Below, kicks off the Hell Holes series with scientists in Alaska facing mysterious craters and an invasion that looks supernatural at first glance. Demons on the Dalton keeps the pressure on, turning the story into a brutal race down Alaska's Dalton Highway. Readers who like his fiction often come for the monsters and action, then stay for the detail, the survival stakes, and the way his scientific background keeps the chaos grounded.
He doesn't only write high-stakes adult fiction. The Secrets of Hawthorne House moves into young adult paranormal mystery, following grief, bullying, friendship, and the unsettling arrival of magic in a small Midwestern town. Future Dreams and Nightmares shifts again, gathering short science fiction about memory, AI, time travel, climate, and the moral mess that new technology can create. And The Adventures of Periwinkle Fae shows a softer side, with pixie bedtime stories built around kindness, curiosity, and helping others.
He clearly enjoys range.
That range also reaches back into his nonfiction. Titles such as Object Oriented Requirements Analysis And Logical Design, The Open Process Framework, and Common System and Software Testing Pitfalls are aimed at engineers and testers, but they share something with his novels: he likes taking complex systems apart and showing how they work. Even his shorter nonfiction, like The Simulation Theory of Consciousness, circles the same territory between machines, minds, and human meaning.
Outside writing, Firesmith has some hobbies that fit his mix of practicality and imagination. He reads widely in science fiction, popular science, and technology, enjoys hiking, and makes hand-crafted magic wands. He even wrote a book on wand lore, which tells you a lot about how comfortably he moves between hard systems thinking and old-fashioned wonder.
He now lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his wife Becky and a shifting household of dogs and cats. These days, that long engineering career and his later fiction life don't feel like opposites at all. They feel like two versions of the same habit: asking how a world works, and then following the answer somewhere interesting.
