Series background & context

Dominion picks up after the Redemption books and follows Anna and Malcolm into a much larger phase of the Watchers universe. By this point they are not just lovers caught in a supernatural struggle. They are rulers, symbols, parents, and targets.

That change in status shapes the whole series. Anna and Malcolm are trying to build a different future while the universe keeps handing them one crisis after another. There are cloud-city politics to manage, old divisions between the down-world and the privileged cities above, demons and princes of Hell still trying to hold power, and the practical challenge of leading when half the people around you do not want things to change.

It is a family story, but not a quiet one.

One of the most interesting parts of Dominion is the War Angels. Anna has power she never wanted to use for conquest, and yet she has been given an army built for exactly that. West gets good tension out of the gap between means and intention. Anna wants reform, not bloodshed, but the world around her keeps insisting that mercy looks weak.

Malcolm helps ground the series. He is not just there for romance, though that thread matters. He is part of the emotional weight of the books, especially when the pressures of rule, prophecy, and parenthood all start hitting at once. Together, he and Anna give Dominion a steadier, more grown-up feeling than the earlier Watchers novels.

Helena is another big piece of the story. Her presence keeps the series from becoming too neat or too righteous. Dominion is full of people who have done terrible things, people who want power, and people who are not sure whether change is possible without more violence. Helena sits right in the middle of that mess.

So while these books are full of angels, demons, celestial politics, and supernatural warfare, they are also about governance, inheritance, and what comes after the heroic breakthrough. Winning one battle does not fix a broken world. Dominion is about living inside that truth.

Readers who like big universe consequences, political fallout, and couples who are trying to hold onto love while carrying impossible responsibility will probably find a lot to like here.
