Author bio

Diana Urban grew up in New York, first in Brooklyn and then in Westchester, and she sounds like someone who never really got over the thrill of a good cliffhanger. As a kid she tore through R.L. Stine's Fear Street books, soaking up twist endings and chapter hooks. That early love of suspense still shows in the stories she writes now, which drop teens into very bad situations and then keep tightening the screws.

For a long time, she didn't think she could write a novel at all.

Urban studied advertising at Boston University and learned storytelling the sideways way, through books, movies, TV, and video games rather than creative writing classes. Then, on a 2012 business trip to Paris, she saw something frightening on the métro, and a whole story idea arrived at once. She wrote that first novel fast, signed with an agent soon after, and even though the manuscript never sold, it broke the seal. Once she started writing, she kept going.

The publishing part took patience. She spent years writing before work, during lunch breaks, and on weekends while holding marketing jobs, often starting at 5 or 6 a.m. Four years after that Paris spark, and with her third literary agent, she sold All Your Twisted Secrets, her debut novel, which came out in 2020.

That book made her lane pretty clear.

In All Your Twisted Secrets, six teens are trapped at a fake scholarship dinner and given an awful choice: pick someone to die, or all of them die. In These Deadly Games, Crystal Donavan has 24 hours to save her kidnapped sister while a stranger forces her into tasks that threaten her friends. Lying in the Deep takes the danger to sea, following heartbroken Jade on a semester-abroad cruise where murder and suspicion spread fast. Then Under the Surface sends four teens into the Paris catacombs, where getting lost is only the start of the problem. Readers who click with Urban tend to like the same things across all four books: tight pacing, big twists, messy friendships, and feelings that stay recognizably teenage even when the stakes get huge.

What makes her work memorable is how often the danger grows out of ordinary pressure points. Bullying, loyalty, first love, jealousy, grief, college dreams, and old secrets all matter in her books. She also likes contained settings, locked rooms, game-like challenges, cruise ships, underground tunnels, because they force characters to show who they are fast. Even when the plots get wild, the core question is usually personal: who do you protect, and what are you willing to do?

Urban's life now sounds a little calmer than her fiction. She lives in Boston with her husband and cat, writes full time, and also freelances in content marketing and copywriting. She has previously worked at BookBub and HubSpot. When she isn't putting fictional people through awful choices, she's reading, playing video games, admiring cute animals, and, as she likes to joke, looking at the beach from a safe distance.
