Series background & context

The Diamond Brothers books are mysteries, but they’re built like a comedy double act. Nick Diamond calls himself a private detective, even though he’s usually broke, behind on rent, and making it up as he goes. Tim Diamond is his much younger brother, and the one person in the office who can usually see the obvious clue.

Most of the stories start with a client walking through the door with a simple problem. Then the case takes a sharp turn into car chases, dubious gangsters, mistaken identities, and the sort of bad luck that seems to follow Nick like a shadow. The tone is light, quick, and very aware that detectives do not look glamorous when they’re living on cheap snacks and optimism.

It’s funny, but the mysteries still play fair.

The books are mostly set in and around London, with occasional detours when a case drags the brothers out of town. The Falcon's Malteser sets the template: a noir-style setup, plenty of jokes, and a mystery that gets more dangerous the closer the brothers get to the truth. Later cases like Public Enemy Number Two and South by Southeast keep escalating the chaos, while shorter books lean into a single sharp hook and a fast finish.

The heart of the series is the relationship between the brothers. Nick is impulsive, overconfident, and oddly lovable. Tim is sharper, more cautious, and sometimes the only adult in the room, even though he’s the kid. Their bickering is part of the fun, but there’s also real loyalty underneath it, especially when trouble shows up at the office door.

Nick Diamond is not a role model.

Horowitz writes these with quick chapters and punchline timing, so they work well for new or reluctant readers. You get the satisfaction of a mystery, but you also get the feeling that anything could happen in the next scene, including a pratfall. Tim still has to do the homework.

If you’re choosing where to begin, start with The Falcon's Malteser and go in order. Some books are full-length novels, and others are shorter cases like I Know What You Did Last Wednesday, The French Confection, and Where Seagulls Dare, which makes the series easy to dip into. Either way, expect a mystery you can follow, jokes you can quote, and a pair of detectives who somehow survive their own plans.
