Series background & context
Phillip Strang's DI Tremayne books centre on Detective Inspector Keith Tremayne, an ageing, blunt, old-school policeman working in and around Salisbury, Wiltshire. He is cynical, stubborn, and not inclined to retire simply because others think he should. His partner, Sergeant Clare Yarwood, brings a steadier presence to cases that often become stranger and more dangerous than they first appear.
The setting gives the series its character. Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, ancient earthworks, villages, farms, racecourses, and isolated roads all sit close to the investigations. History is everywhere, but the crimes are firmly modern: murder, blackmail, greed, revenge, and people using local loyalty to hide what they have done.
Tremayne and Yarwood confront burned bodies, theatrical killings, lottery money, stolen gold, archaeological discoveries, and rural communities that close ranks against outsiders. The cases are self-contained, yet Tremayne's worsening health and the changing partnership between the two detectives give the sequence a continuing thread.
He is difficult, but he does not quit.
The tone is a traditional British detective thriller with a darker edge. It mixes police work with old places and close-knit communities where everyone knows a little, but nobody says enough. Start with Death Unholy, which introduces Tremayne and Yarwood in a case involving an abandoned church and a hostile village. Reading on through Death and the Assassin's Blade and Death and the Lucky Man lets the setting and characters build naturally.
