Series background & context

The Fool Me Once trilogy is built around deception, the lies people tell for money, for love, and for survival. For DI Joe Hogarth, that means cases where the first version of events is never the true one.

Across Fool Me Once, Fool Me Twice, and Fools Rush In, the team keeps running into schemes that look small until you pull on the thread. A fraud becomes a murder. A missing person becomes a cover-up. A friendly face becomes a threat.

Hogarth has to read people as much as evidence. He is blunt, sometimes too blunt, but he has a good sense for when someone is performing. Sue Palmer and Ecrin Kaplin help by approaching interviews differently, giving the unit more angles on the same lie.

These books have a strong procedural core, but the mystery is often about motive and manipulation rather than forensics.

If you enjoy twisty investigations where everyone has an agenda, this trilogy is a satisfying run to read in order.
