Dexter Procter the 10-Year-Old Doctor

by Adam Kay

2024

Dexter Procter is a ten year old genius who has raced through exams and now works as a paediatrician at Lilydale General Hospital. Between a suspicious rival doctor, family chaos and a mystery sickness at his old school, he has to prove he belongs on the ward.

Series background & context

The Dexter Procter series takes Adam Kay's trademark mix of medical know how and silly humour and pours it into a full length story for children. At its heart is Dexter, a prodigy who becomes a hospital doctor at just ten years old. The books lean into the sheer absurdity of that idea while still taking medicine, and the feelings of patients and staff, seriously.

Dexter has been unusual from birth, talking almost immediately and racing through exams until he has more qualifications than most grown ups. By the time readers meet him he is working as a paediatrician at Lilydale General Hospital, diagnosing illnesses, explaining treatments and trying to act like an adult in a world that barely notices he is still a child. Kay uses Dexter's encyclopedic brain to explain real medical concepts in simple language, from germs and organs to the basics of hospital life.

Around him is a cast that keeps the story grounded. Dexter has a loving but exasperating family who are proud of him yet sometimes forget that he might want to do ordinary kid things. At the hospital he navigates supportive nurses, long suffering reception staff and a jealous senior doctor, Dr Drake, who resents being shown up by a child with better ideas. His friends Rupi and Otto offer a bridge back to something like a normal childhood, even as they are swept along on his wildest schemes.

Much of the tension in the first book comes from Dexter trying to balance two worlds. A spectacular outbreak of diarrhoea at his old school threatens to expose quite how odd his situation is, and he finds himself trying to save both the pupils and his own hard won job. The series uses these big comic set pieces to ask smaller questions about fitting in, doing the right thing and learning when to admit you need help.

Like Kay's nonfiction for children, the Dexter books are packed with gross details, bad puns and sideways jokes that reward kids who like to linger over the illustrations. At the same time there is a clear respect for the real work of paediatricians, from building trust with scared families to spotting when something is more serious than it first appears. The hospital is messy and chaotic, but it is also full of people doing their best.

The tone stays warm and fast paced, closer to a sitcom than a solemn issue book. There are toilet gags and pratfalls, but also moments where Dexter has to face up to how lonely it can feel to be different, even when the difference is brilliance. Kay lets him make mistakes, sometimes huge ones, then nudges him toward repairing the damage and learning from what went wrong.

As the series grows, readers can expect more medical mysteries, school disasters and clashes with authority, all filtered through a voice that never talks down to them. If you have children who enjoyed Kay's Anatomy and wanted a story set on the wards rather than a fact book, Dexter Procter offers that same mix of information and anarchy, wrapped around a hero whose heart is finally catching up with his brain.
