Kill Me Again

by Helen H Durrant

2026

A murdered mechanic found beneath burned railway arches should have been safe in witness protection. Detective Vincent Swann follows the case into his concealed past as further deaths suggest a killer thought dead has returned to target him.

Series background & context

Detective Vincent Swann returns to Manchester hoping to move beyond a case that nearly destroyed him. In Helen H. Durrant's crime series, coming home gives him knowledge of the city but little distance from the past. He has a new team to work with and connections he cannot comfortably explain. Each investigation brings an immediate threat to other people while testing how much of his own history he can keep separate from the job.

Knowing the city is useful, but being known there can be dangerous.

In the Dark Places begins with a murdered young woman and evidence that a child has been taken from the scene. A pink ribbon suggests a connection with a serial killer believed to be in prison. For Swann, that clue raises questions about an earlier investigation and whether the danger he thought was contained has returned. Finding the missing child makes those questions urgent. He cannot put the inquiry aside while he decides what to reveal to colleagues who are still learning how to work with him.

The police team adds another source of pressure. Swann's arrival creates friction with Kat Jardine, whose own career ambitions put her in competition with him. Both must handle that rivalry while investigating violence in a place Swann knows through more than police files. His burner phone and contacts in the city's criminal world offer possible routes to information, but using them could expose secrets. The series therefore combines the work of solving a case with the problem of deciding whether the detective's private knowledge can be trusted by the people around him.

Kill Me Again opens with mechanic Rob Mitchell found dead beneath burned railway arches. Mitchell was in witness protection, making his presence back in Manchester a question in itself. Swann needs to understand why he returned and who knew where to find him. Further deaths pull the investigation toward a hidden past Swann has spent years trying to escape. His promotion has also complicated relations with his partner, so following the rules and earning cooperation remain important even when the case feels increasingly personal.

Read In the Dark Places before Kill Me Again to follow Swann's return and the development of his working relationships. Expect British police procedurals with a continuing personal mystery, professional tension, and investigations that reach into the city's criminal connections. Manchester is both his home territory and the place where old associations can become liabilities. The recurring question is how he can protect victims and work within his team when the next lead may force him to confront something he would rather keep hidden.
