The Detective Sergeant Pace books are linked crime novels rather than a conventional detective series. Pace is the thread that holds them together, but Will Carver is just as interested in the damaged civilians, misfits, and compulsive loners circling each case as he is in the police work. The result is darker, stranger, and less predictable than a normal procedural.

It starts with Good Samaritans, where a crossed phone line, a suicidal woman, a sleepless husband, and a violent marriage spiral into murder. From there, the series gets even more ambitious. Nothing Important Happened Today turns to an invisible suicide cult. Hinton Hollow Death Trip leaves the city for a small town and lets Evil narrate the story. Psychopaths Anonymous shifts focus to Maeve, a killer from the earlier books, and follows her attempt to build a support group for people like herself.

So yes, these books get weird.

Pace himself is a fascinatingly indirect lead. He is present, observant, and often under pressure, but he rarely takes over the whole stage. He moves through the novels like a shadow, picking at the edges of crimes that are already deep inside other people's lives. That gives the series its unusual shape. Instead of watching a detective dominate every scene, you watch him try to understand people who are lonely, manipulative, frightened, addicted, or morally far gone.

The settings matter a lot. London is full of anonymous calls, train journeys, bridges, cheap rooms, offices, and flats where people can disappear in plain sight. Then Hinton Hollow Death Trip flips the mood and goes rural, with Pace returning to his childhood home just as the town starts to rot from the inside. Carver uses both city crowds and small-town closeness to ask the same question: how much darkness is already there before the plot even starts?

These books are bleak, but they are not humorless.

Carver mixes noir, horror, satire, and social commentary without stopping to ask permission. The series keeps circling ideas like choice, guilt, performance, cruelty, loneliness, and the small bargains people make with themselves. Phones, social media, self-help language, cult thinking, and everyday routines all become tools in the tension. Even when the premises are high concept, the emotions underneath are recognisably human.

If you want a clean case-of-the-week rhythm, Pace may not be your series. If you like crime fiction that slips into psychological horror and follows the consequences of bad choices all the way down, it is a great fit. Reading in order helps, especially because characters and echoes carry across the books, but each novel also has its own sharp premise and its own kind of nightmare.
