The two threads are separated by centuries, but Adams builds them so they speak to each other.

That gives the series a slightly different rhythm from her other detective work. You still get suspects, interviews and police procedure, but you also get echoes, parallels and the sense that one age can shed light on another. It is not full fantasy, and it is not pure historical fiction either. It sits in the interesting space between the two, where a modern murder can feel shaped by something much older.

Roz herself helps keep it grounded. She is not written as a mystic or a chosen figure. She is a detective trying to do her job while the case keeps opening out beneath her. That tension between common sense and unease is a big part of the book's appeal.
