Series background & context
The Detective Markham Mystery series follows DI Gilbert "Gil" Markham and his team at Bromgrove CID. It begins with A Walking Shadow, later reissued as Crime in the Choir, when two modern skeletons are discovered on the grounds of St Mary's Choir School. The find pulls Markham into a case involving local fear, institutional resistance, and secrets that have been buried for far too long.
Bromgrove is the kind of English town where schools, churches, cultural venues, and businesses form tight little worlds. That makes every murder personal. A victim is rarely just a victim, because someone always knew them, depended on them, resented them, or had something to lose when the truth comes out.
Markham is clever, controlled, and hard to read. His childhood was deeply troubled, and he keeps much of himself behind a formal manner that can make colleagues wary. Still, he is fiercely committed to the people harmed by violent crime. He is also under constant pressure to keep his clear-up rate high while dealing with DCI Sidney, a boss more concerned with appearances than uncomfortable answers.
His closest colleague is DS George Noakes, known as Noakesy. Noakes is a gruff Yorkshireman, untidy in both dress and conversation, with an instinctive dislike of official polish. Yet he is observant, loyal, and often kinder than he first appears. Their odd-couple partnership gives the series much of its energy. Markham's girlfriend, English teacher Olivia Mullen, and fellow detectives Kate Burton and DC Doyle also become important parts of the ongoing story.
The cases move through a wide range of settings. A convent, psychiatric hospital, ballet company, art gallery, dance school, book club, Oxford museum, retirement home, bridal boutique, and the Tower of London all provide a new social world for Markham to enter. Each book focuses on a distinct investigation, with a murder that exposes tensions beneath a respectable surface.
These are British police mysteries with a serious streak. The books have colourful local characters and sharply contrasting detectives, but the crimes can be dark and the stakes are real. Personal history, corruption, abuse of power, family loyalties, and professional jealousy regularly complicate the search for a killer.
Most cases can be read on their own, but starting with A Walking Shadow or Crime in the Choir is the best way to meet Markham and understand his bond with Noakes and Olivia. Reading in publication order also lets the team, their friendships, and their private pressures develop naturally as Bromgrove keeps finding new ways to hide old secrets.
