Series background & context

Detective Dave Burrows is the thread that links much of Fleur McDonald’s fiction. He’s a Western Australian country cop who grew up wanting to be a farmer, and the novels follow him from wide-eyed young constable to seasoned investigator of rural crime.

Dave’s backstory begins on his family’s wheat and sheep property near Northam. In his early twenties he returns from agricultural college full of ideas, only to clash with a father who doesn’t want change and older brothers who side against him. That family rift, explored in the short story The Farmer’s Choice, pushes Dave off the farm and into the police force, carrying a deep love for the land and a complicated loyalty to it.

The “young Dave” novels – including Fool's Gold, Without a Doubt, Red Dirt Country, Something to Hide, Rising Dust, Into the Night and Shock Waves – are set through the 1990s and early 2000s. They follow Dave’s first posting to the goldfields town of Barrabine, his ambitious move into the stock squad and his early marriage to Mel. Each book drops him into a new investigation, from stock theft and missing backpackers to storm-lashed coastlines, bushfires and bomb blasts, while long-running enemies like Bulldust and Scotty keep the stakes personal.

Running alongside that timeline is a second strand of books where Dave appears slightly older and often as part of an ensemble cast. In these rural mysteries, set largely around the fictional town of Barker and the Flinders Ranges, his cases intersect with the lives of women like Brianna in Suddenly One Summer, Chelsea in Where the River Runs, Emma in Deception Creek and Zara in Starting From Now and The Shearer's Wife. Later novels such as Broad River Station, Voices in the Dark and Out in Nowhere bring in new police colleagues and younger characters while still carrying Dave’s history with them.

Across both timelines the series blends procedural detail with the realities of farming life. Dave investigates stock theft, drug smuggling, cybercrime and organised violence, but his days are just as likely to involve long drives on red-dirt tracks, camp-oven meals with station families and the quiet politics of small towns. His work life constantly rubs up against his marriages, fatherhood and his tendency to throw himself into danger for the sake of someone doing it tough.

You don’t need to read the books in strict order – each story stands alone – but taken together they trace Dave’s evolution from idealistic young constable to battle-scarred detective who still believes in justice, even when the rules get in the way. The joy of the Detective Dave Burrows books lies in that mix of rugged landscapes, layered mysteries and a central character whose heart is firmly in the country.
