Series background & context

Clara Jefferies is the kind of detective who can't keep her work at arm's length, mostly because every case in this series cuts close to home. The books begin with The Fallen Girls, when Clara, a Dallas detective, is called back to Alber, Utah after her half sister Delilah disappears. Going home means stepping back into the world she escaped, a closed, fundamentalist Mormon community where plural marriage, silence, and male authority shape daily life.

For Clara, Alber is not just a setting. It's unfinished business.

That personal history gives the series its charge. Clara knows the rules of Elijah's People because she was raised inside them, and she knows how easily women and children can be pushed aside when reputation matters more than truth. In The Fallen Girls, a search for one missing girl widens into something much darker. The people who should be helping, including members of Clara's own family, often close ranks instead, leaving her to work around fear, loyalty, and outright lies.

The later books deepen that pressure rather than easing it. In Her Final Prayer, Clara faces a horrifying family massacre at a ranch outside Alber and quickly learns that the killer may be shielded by the same network of obedience and secrecy that protects powerful men in town. In The Blessed Bones, the discovery of a young pregnant girl's remains opens a trail through old missing-person files and forgotten abuse. By the later books Clara is no longer just returning to Alber, she is helping police it, which makes every decision more public and more personal.

The setting matters a lot here. Alber sits in a mountain valley, bordered by fields, ranches, trailers, and roads that feel empty until they don't. Casey uses that isolation well. The town can look peaceful from a distance, but the geography helps keep people apart, keeps outsiders guessing, and gives predators room to hide. Even ordinary places, a cornfield, a porch, a church lot, can start to feel charged.

The tone is dark, but it isn't flashy. These are police procedurals built around missing girls, buried crimes, family fractures, and the long aftereffects of control. Clara is tough, but the books do not pretend toughness fixes everything. She carries trauma, anger, and guilt into the investigations, and that emotional weight is part of what makes the series work.

In Alber, every mystery is also a family argument that can kill.
