Detective Casey Wray Books in Order

The Detective Casey Wray series is a contemporary police procedural set around Hampstead County and Rockport, in a fictional Long Island setting. Casey is a Detective Sergeant who approaches cases with patience, nerve, and a refusal to accept the easy explanation. That makes her useful in a crisis, but it also puts her at odds with people who would rather protect a reputation than face the truth.

Black Reed Bay begins with a distressing 911 call from a young woman apparently running for her life in an exclusive oceanfront neighborhood. Then she vanishes. What first appears to be a domestic incident soon becomes much harder to explain, as Casey and her colleagues face conflicting accounts, unreliable witnesses, and pressure from inside the department.

The setting is a big part of the tension.

The series places affluent beachfront homes beside struggling communities and remote winter landscapes. Those contrasts matter because money and status can shape who gets believed, who gets protected, and whose disappearance is treated as urgent. Casey has to work through that imbalance while trying to keep the investigation focused on the people at its center.

In Shatter Creek, the fallout from corruption within the Hampstead County Police Department still hangs over Casey's career. Although she has been cleared, not everyone is convinced of her innocence. Working with rookie partner Billy Drocker, she investigates a daytime double homicide in Rockport, then watches the case widen after another shooting. The professional threat is as important as the mystery itself.

These are not cozy mysteries. The books are tense, grounded crime stories with layered investigations, department politics, and a lead detective who has to keep going when the official version of events does not add up. Casey's determination can leave her isolated, but it also makes her a steady center in cases built on evasions and half-truths.
