Destined Books in Order

The Destined series, written by Shani Petroff and Darci Manley, is set in a future where people do not get to choose their own path. Soon after birth, each person's destiny is identified and recorded. Their future work, place in society, and purpose are treated as fixed facts, and the government enforces the system with deadly seriousness.

At the center of the story are Madden Sumner and Dax Harris. Madden was born into the privileged Purple ring and has been told all her life that she will become a Minister of the Seven. Her future looks secure, important, and carefully planned. Dax lives at the opposite end of the social order. She is an Ash, and worse, she is a Blank, someone with no recorded destiny at all.

Neither girl fits as neatly into the system as it expects.

The series begins with Ash, which alternates between Madden and Dax's points of view. Their lives initially seem far apart, but events force them to confront the rules that have shaped both of them. Madden begins to see the cost hidden behind her status, while Dax refuses to let the lack of an assigned future decide her worth.

The setting matters because every part of life is organized around rank and prediction. Social rings determine who has power and who is ignored. Destiny Specialists have the authority to define what people are supposed to become. Even personal choices, including love and family ties, are vulnerable to the demands of the state. The result is a tense dystopian world where disobedience is not a private act. It can put everyone around you at risk.

As the story widens, questions about fate become questions about control. Can a system that promises order ever be fair when it takes choice away? Can people move beyond the category they were given at birth? Madden and Dax approach those questions from different places, which keeps the conflict personal as well as political.

Destined is a good fit for readers who enjoy future-set YA stories about rigid social systems, secret histories, rebellion, and characters forced to reconsider the lives they thought were waiting for them. The pace balances danger and mystery with relationships, as two young women learn that the future may be less certain than they were taught.
