Author bio
Desirée writes interconnected urban stories that circle around Atlanta, black colleges, and the music scene, then twist into fantasy, horror, and romance. Her books feel like catching up on gossip about cousins you love but still side eye.
She was born in South Carolina and started telling stories early, staging little plays in seventh grade before moving on to long pieces of online fan fiction. Even then, she liked big ensembles, messy families, and characters who talked back.
In 2014 she self published For the Love of ATL 1, the series that kicked off her shared universe. Set around students at an Atlanta HBCU, it mixed campus parties, Greek life, colorism, and down low secrets with the kind of soap level drama people usually only admit to watching.
That world grew into the Carter family books, from The Carter Boys and The Return of the Carter Boys to the Carter Girls and related Hoodlums and Hooligans titles. The Carters are rappers, hustlers, and college kids whose love lives, music careers, and family loyalties keep colliding in Atlanta’s West Side and on stages around the city.
Running alongside them is Montana’s arc in Not Another Thug Story and its sequels, a hood saga that digs into image, masculinity, and how far someone will go to protect a lie. Readers stick with these books because the betrayals hurt, but the tenderness feels earned.
Desirée also leans hard into the supernatural. The Moon series, starting with Hoodwinked and Moon Child, turns Atlanta high society into a black urban fantasy, complete with witches, wolf packs, sirens, and full moon rituals. The Tuesday and Skye Indie Film books thread in the same families and neighborhoods, following dancers, filmmakers, and root working Skye sisters through protests, messy relationships, and spiritual drama.
More recently she has been playing with form and genre. The Bruh Man books began as a serial about a writer documenting volatile rap star Kuran, then expanded into novels like Bruh Man, Book of Kuran, and The Love Child. The Perfect Sister pushes into dystopian thriller territory with a Black women separatist cult, while The Girl Below uses wild, comedic fantasy to explore one woman’s sexual awakening and self esteem.
Off the page, she talks directly to aspiring writers in Paper Dreams, a short guide to how she built her career, and in big behind the scenes projects like ATL Diaries, which stitches together deleted scenes, alternate drafts, and blog posts from earlier years.
She is an on again, off again college student who has studied foreign languages between book releases, and she often jokes that she does not outline so much as chase the small “trailers” playing in her head. She works hard on opening chapters, then lets her characters drag her into trouble. When she finds herself grinning at the screen because someone on the page is being foolish, she knows readers will feel it too.
If you drop into her world for the first time, expect heavy doses of Atlanta, big families, flawed women who refuse to be quiet, and men who have to grow up or get left behind. The tone swings from hilarious to heartbreaking, but the through line is the same: love, in all its messy forms, is worth writing about.
