Series background & context

Desired Affliction sits on the darker, more emotionally bruised side of C.A. Harms's catalog. The series is built around pain that does not disappear quickly and a relationship that has to keep fighting through the aftershocks of trauma, bad choices, and old history.

It starts with Lexi Warren and Kole Hartman.

In Toxic and Conquer, their story unfolds through a push and pull that is intense from the beginning. Lexi is trying to survive the fallout of a traumatic spiral, while Kole is both part of her past and one of the only people still willing to keep reaching for her. The tone is heavy, personal, and often claustrophobic in the best way. These books want you inside the characters' pain, not just watching it from the outside.

That makes the series different from Harms's lighter work. The romance is not built around banter or a cute meet-cute. It is built around damage, memory, and the question of whether love can still feel safe after life has already gone off the rails. Even the later titles carry that same mood. The emotions run hot, the hurt runs deep, and the recovery is never neat.

If you want Harms at her most dramatic and emotionally raw, this is a good series to explore. Expect darkness, dependency, stubborn devotion, and characters trying to claw their way back toward each other one hard choice at a time.
