Author bio

Derek Landy grew up in Lusk in County Dublin, Ireland, just outside the city. He was born in 1974 and spent much of his childhood in and around his family's vegetable farm, learning early what hard physical work feels like.

At school he went to Drogheda Grammar School, then studied animation for a while at Ballyfermot College in Dublin. He earned a black belt in kenpo karate, which later helped him write fight scenes you can almost see as you read. That mix of everyday graft and choreographed violence sits underneath a lot of his fiction.

Before publishing novels, Landy wrote screenplays. Two of them became Irish films, the crime drama Dead Bodies and the horror comedy Boy Eats Girl. One film won a major national award and the other was nominated, and Landy himself picked up a nomination for his script.

Then he realised he wanted a story that belonged to him alone, so he sat down to write about a wisecracking skeleton in a trench coat.

That character became Skulduggery Pleasant. The first novel, Skulduggery Pleasant, came out in 2007 after HarperCollins offered a headline making deal for the series. The book introduced readers to Stephanie Edgley, who takes the name Valkyrie Cain, and to a secret magical world hidden inside modern Ireland, where a walking, talking skeleton detective works for a shadowy organisation called the Sanctuary.

What began as a single book grew into a long running saga told in phases, with mainline novels, novellas and spin offs such as The End of the World, Tanith Low in the Maleficent Seven, Armageddon Outta Here and Hell Breaks Loose. Along the way the series picked up prizes like the Red House Children's Book Award and an Irish Book of the Decade vote for the opening volume, but the things readers talk about most are the breakneck plots, the jokes and the characters who feel like old friends.

Landy followed Skulduggery down a darker road with Demon Road, a horror themed trilogy about Amber Lamont, a teenager who discovers she is literally part demon and has to flee across a supernatural version of the United States. Those books lean hard into his love of horror movies and roadside Americana, full of killer cars, cursed towns and a reluctant heroine trying to decide what kind of monster she wants to be.

Since 2018 he has also written for Marvel, working on titles such as Black Order: The Warmasters of Thanos, Falcon & Winter Soldier: Cut off one head and the event collection United We Stand. Earlier he wrote The Mystery of the Haunted Cottage, a Tenth Doctor short story that let him play inside the Doctor Who universe he grew up watching.

Landy still lives near Dublin. He shares his life with writer Laura Jordan, to whom he is engaged, a dog and a small crowd of cats. When he is not touring or posting about his work, he is usually wrestling with the next Skulduggery twist, looking for new ways to blend sharp dialogue, slapstick mayhem and genuine emotional stakes.
