Author bio
Delilah Marvelle was born and raised in Chicago, where she spent her early years studying languages, reading widely, and playing the pianoforte. She speaks both Polish and English, and her love of older stories started early, with writers such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, the Brontës, and Edith Wharton among her favorites.
She was also a child with a busy imagination. In her own account, being sent to her room after one misadventure or another gave her time to discover the power of writing. She began filling pages with love stories, often imagining herself as the kind of adventurous heroine who might get to join King Arthur at the Round Table.
That instinct, to give women room for desire, curiosity, and a little trouble, runs through her fiction.
Marvelle writes historical romance, most often set in the early nineteenth century. Her books move between London drawing rooms, rougher corners of New York, Russia, France, and colonial India. The settings matter, but the heart of the stories is usually two people trying to meet each other honestly while class rules, family pressure, old wounds, or public gossip stand in the way.
Her debut, Mistress of Pleasure, introduced the School of Gallantry, a London establishment where men are taught about seduction, respect, and pleasure by the former courtesan Madame de Maitenon. The series continued with titles including Lord of Pleasure, Lady of Pleasure, Night of Pleasure, and The Duke of Andelot. These books are frank, playful historical romances, with different couples connected by the school and its larger circle.
She later turned to a more interconnected mystery in the Rumor books. Beginning with the prequel Forever Mine and continuing through Forever and a Day, Forever a Lady, and Forever a Lord, the series links New York and London through a vanished boy, family secrets, and the damage that gossip can do. The Scandal books, beginning with Prelude to a Scandal, similarly put love stories under the glare of society and ask their characters to decide how much of themselves they can safely reveal.
Her work doesn't avoid complicated subjects. Desire, shame, independence, grief, second chances, and the gap between private lives and public expectations show up again and again. The Whipping Society books, starting with Mr. Ridley, take a darker path through 1830s London and Calcutta, following investigator Evan Oswald Ridley and Jemdanee Kumar as danger and an intense relationship draw them together.
Marvelle has been a two-time Golden Heart finalist, a double finalist for the Bookseller’s Best Award, and an RT Book Reviewer’s Choice nominee. She also brings a practical interest in the places she writes about, traveling for research when she can.
She now lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and family. Outside writing, she has studied theater, trained on the pianoforte, enjoys kickboxing and running, and has a culinary degree. She has also won a national cooking contest for an original cookie, which feels like a fitting detail for a writer whose books often make room for both mischief and comfort.
