Willie

by Franklin Horton

2024

Willie scrapes by outside Damascus, Virginia, juggling odd jobs, raising her own kids, and sheltering other strays no one else will take. After a nationwide blackout, her abusive ex-boyfriend—who also wears a badge—decides it’s finally open season on her and her makeshift family.

Series background & context

The Defeated Creek series turns the camera toward a smaller, rougher slice of Horton’s shared universe. Its first book, Willie, is set outside Damascus, Virginia, in a community where money is short, gossip travels fast, and everyone knows who will show up when there’s trouble. For years that person has been Willie herself.

Willie is a hard-working single mother who never had much of a safety net. She keeps her own kids afloat with a patchwork of jobs and side hustles, and she quietly becomes the rescue mom for teenagers and young adults who have nobody else. Her house is crowded, messy, and full of people who are trying, in their own ways, to claw toward something better.

Shadowing that fragile stability is her ex-boyfriend, a local cop who turned into a stalker when she refused to take him back. He knows the back roads, he knows how to weaponize the badge, and he’s not used to hearing the word no. Willie survives by being stubborn, smart, and willing to stand between him and anyone weaker, even when that means drawing his attention.

When a massive terror attack leads to an open-ended national blackout, all the thin protections of normal life peel away. The power stays off, supplies dry up, and official help stops coming. In that vacuum, Willie’s ex becomes even more dangerous, convinced that nobody is watching and that her little patch of Defeated Creek belongs to him.

The series follows Willie as she leans on every scrap of resilience she’s built over a lifetime—mechanical skills, local knowledge, a deep web of loyalties—to keep food on the table and predators off her porch. She’s not a prepper in the classic sense, but she’s spent years surviving on too little, and that turns out to be its own kind of preparation.

Defeated Creek shares the broader Borrowed World, Locker Nine, and Mad Mick timeline, but its feel is more intimate. Instead of national politics or roaming special-operations teams, you get a close look at neighbors, family grudges, and how quickly an abusive relationship can turn lethal when there are no more rules. It’s a good entry point if you want the stakes of a collapse told through one fierce, flawed woman and the kids who’ve come to see her as home.
