Debbie Behan was born in Tallangatta, Victoria, Australia, and grew up surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers, and wide open country. That landscape seems to have stayed with her. Again and again, her fiction reaches for big skies, strange powers, far-off worlds, and the feeling that ordinary life might open into something much larger.

The stars stayed with her.

Before turning to fiction, Behan spent about 30 years working in the food industry, and she has said that her writing background first came through practical work such as food safety manuals for supermarket chains. The shift into novels came later, after health problems pushed her to take time away from that job. During that pause, her husband Shaun took her to see Twilight and brought home the books. She has said she was not much of a reader at the time, but once she started, she tore through the series and decided to try writing a novel herself.

What started as a challenge became a second career.

Behan wrote quickly and with real momentum. One of her earliest projects was Soulcasters, a paranormal fantasy that stayed close to her heart for years before publication. Her first published novel was Cloud Riders in 2012, a book that later appeared in revised form as Cassandra Goddess of Harmony. That story became the foundation for her best-known sequence, the Magical Cosmic collection, followed by Caitlin Goddess of Peace and Caitlin II Masquerade Magic.

Those books show what Behan likes to play with. She mixes gods and goddesses, planetary lore, immortals, hidden powers, romance, and danger, then pushes everything into motion. The Magical Cosmic books follow peacekeepers who travel through star systems and Home Worlds, while Soulcasters leans darker and more apocalyptic. In Alina Eternal, she turns to an immortal heroine on the run, and in Little Champions of Helios she shifts toward a younger, quest-driven adventure with boys pulled into a magical mission.

Her stories tend to come back to a few favorite ideas. Identity matters. Family matters. Love matters, even when the universe is being difficult about it. Readers who enjoy Behan usually seem to connect with the emotional directness of the books, the cosmic fantasy setup, and the way she combines mythic material with recognisable human feelings like jealousy, grief, loyalty, curiosity, and hope.

She has also written for younger readers and shorter forms, including The Adventures of Bray and Zac and the collection Utopian Folktales. That broader range makes sense when you look at how she talks about imagination. She has linked her ideas to scenery, pictures, research, clouds, constellations, mythology, and the simple habit of looking up at the night sky and asking what if.

In more recent years, Behan has been based in Western Australia and has continued writing and publishing alongside Shaun. The publishing side of the work seems to matter to her as much as the storytelling itself. Even so, the heart of the appeal is still the same, fantasy with movement, feeling, and a strong pull toward the stars.
