The series makes strong use of Scarborough and the surrounding coast. Beaches, harbours, cliffs, old tourist streets and hard weather all sit behind the investigations. The Tom Raven books are a little darker and more coastal than the Bridget Hart novels. They still have the clear mystery structure MS Morris readers expect, but the mood leans into old damage, buried crimes and the question of whether going home helps you face the past or just gives it a better shot at you.
