The DCI Tom Raven series shifts MS Morris from Oxford to the North Yorkshire coast. Its lead, DCI Tom Raven, is a senior detective with a life and career built away from Scarborough, the town he left behind decades earlier. When murder pulls him back, the return is not just professional. It is personal from the start.
The Landscape of Death opens with a body washing up on a beach with a gunshot wound and a ring as the key clue. Raven takes charge of the inquiry, but being back in his hometown means he cannot treat the case like just another file. The prime suspect is tied to his teenage years, and some people on the local team are not sure they want him there.
That is the hook: a detective investigating the place that made him and wounded him.
The series makes strong use of Scarborough and the surrounding coast. Beaches, harbours, cliffs, old tourist streets and hard weather all sit behind the investigations. This is not a postcard version of Yorkshire, although the scenery matters. It is a place where long memories, class divisions, family grudges and moneyed respectability can all affect who talks, who lies and who keeps quiet.
Raven's most important ally early on is Detective Sergeant Becca Shawcross. The Tom Raven books are a little darker and more coastal than the Bridget Hart novels. They still have the clear mystery structure MS Morris readers expect, but the mood leans into old damage, buried crimes and the question of whether going home helps you face the past or just gives it a better shot at you.
Start with The Landscape of Death. It introduces Raven, Becca, Scarborough and the personal history that gives the series its bite. Beneath Cold Earth is the natural next step, deepening the team dynamic and showing how past and present keep colliding on this stretch of coast.
