Series background & context

The DCI Michael Lambert books are Matt Brolly's first crime series, a run of novels that blend gritty police work with conspiracies, shadowy organisations and very personal stakes. The stories move between London and other parts of the UK, but they always stay close to a detective who is haunted, stubborn and unwilling to let go of a case once it has its hooks in him.

The series properly begins in Dead Eyed, where Lambert is pulled back into an investigation that mirrors an older killing which changed his life. A new victim is found with their eyes removed and Latin words carved into their chest, the calling card of the Soul Jacker, a murderer Lambert linked to a college friend's death decades earlier. Following the trail forces him to confront not only the killer but the unresolved grief and guilt he has carried ever since.

Dead Lucky turns the screw by giving Lambert a case that is both cruel and intimate. A sadist is forcing husbands to watch their wives die, staging each scene with care and then repeating the pattern with new couples. As Lambert and his team chase faint leads, anonymous calls bring the investigation into his home life and make it clear that his own family could be next if he fails.

In Dead Embers Brolly widens the canvas. A house fire leaves a traumatised child and two bodies, one of them a senior officer, and Lambert is ordered to treat it as more than an accident. At the same time anti corruption detectives are circling his boss, his relationship is on the brink and he is battling blackouts he does not fully understand. The deeper he digs into the fire, the more he realises that the blaze is only the surface of a much larger and more dangerous story.

Dead Time pushes Lambert even further. What looks like a bathroom suicide is undermined by a handwritten note that simply names him, and similar deaths start to point toward a meticulous copycat killer. A high profile prisoner escapes, intelligence agencies take an interest and Lambert is forced to decide how much he is willing to risk when his family are dragged into the game.

Alongside the main run sits Dead Water, a prequel novella that flashes back to an earlier stage of Lambert's career. A man once jailed for drowning university students is released, disappears and new bodies begin to appear in the water just as Lambert's boss goes missing. Working to a seven day deadline, a younger Lambert shows the same mix of doggedness and moral unease that shapes him later. The later novel Dead End continues his story in the present, starting with the murder of a homeless veteran and pulling Lambert into a web of hate crime, street protests and political tension on the streets of London.

Across the series Brolly uses Lambert's cases to explore themes of justice, trauma and the long fallout from bad decisions. The books are fast paced and often dark, but they keep their focus on character, whether that means the damaged lead detective or the victims and families left in the wake of each crime. Readers who like to watch one investigator evolve over time will get the most out of reading the Lambert novels in order, starting with Dead Eyed and then moving through the subsequent books, dropping back to Dead Water whenever they want to see where it all began.
