That is where he meets Madeleine Wallace, a brilliant young killer with ties to the Nightwalkers, a group terrorizing Gotham. She will speak to Bruce when she refuses everyone else, and that turns their relationship into the engine of the book. Is he getting close to her for answers, or is she using him just as expertly in return?

This is the real mood of Batman: Nightwalker.

It is a Gotham thriller before it is a superhero spectacle. There are gadgets and recognizable names, but the focus stays on tension, manipulation, class, corruption, and the idea of Bruce learning what kind of man he wants to be. Marie Lu leans into the push and pull between obsession and restraint, which suits Gotham very well.

If you want a story about Bruce Wayne before the cape fully takes over, this entry does that job nicely. It stands on its own, so you do not need the rest of the DC Icons books to follow it. And if you already know Batman lore, the fun is in watching Lu strip the setup back to a younger, less certain Bruce and let the danger come to him first.
