Author bio

Dawn Brookes grew up in Leicester, England, and later lived in London, Berkshire, and Derbyshire. Long before she wrote fiction full-time, she spent nearly four decades working in nursing and healthcare, a background that still gives her books their practical detail and steady human focus.

Her path into writing was built in stages. She trained as a nurse in 1977, went on to work as a hospital nurse, midwife, district nurse, and community matron, and also wrote for professional journals. She co-edited a healthcare textbook, earned a bachelor's degree with honours and a master's degree in education, and later completed an MA in Creative Writing with distinction.

That is a lot of life to draw on.

Many readers first meet her through the Rachel Prince mysteries, which begin with A Cruise to Murder. Those books put murder, medicine, friendship, and travel on board the fictional Coral Queen. Rachel's best friend Sarah is a cruise ship nurse, so Brookes's medical knowledge slips naturally into the background while the main story keeps moving. Readers who enjoy armchair travel tend to like these books for the changing cruise routes, the recurring cast, and the way the mysteries stay clean and readable without losing tension.

She has also expanded that fictional world in a few directions. The Lady Marjorie Snellthorpe books, beginning with Death of a Blogger and Murder at the Opera House, follow an older sleuth and her equally memorable friends as they bicker, blunder, and solve murders that really should have ruined their holidays. The Carlos Jacobi novels, starting with Body in the Woods, take a firmer private-investigator approach and feel a little grittier, though still without graphic excess.

She likes a mystery, but she also likes people.

That comes through just as strongly in her memoirs. Hurry Up Nurse and its sequels go back to her student nurse days in the late 1970s and early 1980s, especially in Leicester, London, and Berkshire. These books are not polished nostalgia pieces. They are funny, candid, and full of the small tasks, sharp lessons, awkward moments, and unforgettable patients that make working life feel real. Readers who enjoy social history often find a lot to like there too, because the books quietly capture a very particular moment in British hospital life.

Brookes also writes for children. Some of those stories are built around animals and the natural world, such as Suki Seal and the Plastic Ring and Danny the Caterpillar. Others reflect her Christian background, including the Miracles of Jesus books, which retell gospel stories through the eyes of children or ordinary people who might have been there. Across both strands, the tone stays warm, clear, and direct.

Cruising matters too. Brookes has said she takes regular cruise holidays for research, and that love of ships, ports, and life at sea runs through much of her fiction. Even when a body turns up, the books still leave room for the pleasures of travel, routine, and watching strangers rub along in close quarters. The surname Prince, she has explained, came from a childhood dog who used to rest his head on her knee while she read.

She now lives in Derbyshire and writes across mystery, memoir, and children's fiction. What ties the work together is fairly simple: clear storytelling, clean crime, lived-in detail, and a lasting interest in ordinary people under pressure, whether they are nurses, retirees, children, or reluctant sleuths on a ship that was supposed to be a holiday.
