Author bio
David Rosenfelt grew up in Paterson, New Jersey, the middle of three brothers in what he’s often described as a happy, ordinary, sports‑filled childhood that left him with lifelong affection for his hometown.
He studied business at New York University and, diploma in hand, set his sights on the movie business. A well‑timed interview with his uncle, then president of a major film studio, led to an entry‑level job and eventually to a senior post as president of marketing at Tri‑Star Pictures. His days were packed with trailers, test screenings, and trying to rescue—or quietly bury—films of every stripe.
Over time the corporate grind lost its shine. Rosenfelt left the studio world and began writing full‑time, first turning out feature‑film scripts that never quite made it to the screen, then TV movies that did. The work taught him how to move a story fast, keep scenes tight, and lean on dialogue to carry character.
Those habits carried straight into his crime fiction. Drawing on years spent around lawyers and executives, he dreamed up Andy Carpenter, a smart‑mouthed New Jersey defense attorney who’d rather hang out with his dog than bill hours. Andy’s debut in Open and Shut introduced readers to Paterson courtrooms, golden retriever Tara, and a voice that balanced real suspense with a steady stream of deadpan asides; the novel went on to be a finalist for both the Edgar and Shamus awards.
What started as one legal thriller became a long‑running series. The Andy Carpenter books now span dozens of titles, mixing courtroom battles, murder investigations, and dog‑centered subplots with a recurring cast that feels like family. Rosenfelt has also built out that universe with the K Team novels, which follow investigator Corey Douglas, K‑9 partner Simon Garfunkel, and familiar faces like Laurie Collins and Marcus Clark, and with the Doug Brock thrillers, centered on a New Jersey state trooper coping with amnesia while chasing high‑stakes cases.
Alongside series work, he’s written a string of stand‑alone thrillers—Don’t Tell a Soul, On Borrowed Time, Heart of a Killer, Airtight, Without Warning and others—that lean into tight hooks and ordinary people shoved into impossible corners. Two nonfiction books, Dogtripping and Lessons from Tara, step out of crime entirely to talk about the dogs that have shaped his life.
Rosenfelt’s reputation as a dog person isn’t a marketing angle; it’s the spine of his day‑to‑day life. In 1995 he and his wife founded the Tara Foundation, a rescue devoted especially to golden retrievers and senior dogs. Over the years they’ve helped save more than four thousand animals, often bringing the ones nobody else would take into their own home. At one point they were living with roughly two dozen dogs at once, an experience he chronicles—with a lot of self‑mockery—in Dogtripping.
That rescue work eventually sparked a cross‑country move from Southern California to Maine, caravanning in RVs packed with dogs and volunteers. Today he and his wife still live in Maine with a shifting pack of rescues, writing days punctuated by walks, vet appointments, and the logistics of running a foundation.
On the page, his style stays close to what he learned in film and TV: short scenes, clear stakes, and voices that sound like someone telling you a story across the table. Whether he’s writing about a small‑town time capsule or a Paterson courtroom, the tone is conversational, a little weary, often very funny, and grounded in affection for both dogs and people.
Taken together—legal mysteries, police thrillers, stand‑alone suspense, and dog memoirs—his work adds up to a career built on two constants: a love of twisty stories, and a conviction that life is better with a few dogs underfoot.
