Author bio

Daryl Banner grew up in Katy, Texas, just outside Houston, and started making things early. He taught himself piano by ear, wrote music as a kid, and spent his teen years deep in theatre. By high school, he was already writing plays as well as acting in them, which tells you a lot about the kind of creative brain he has.

Theatre came first.

At the University of Houston, Banner studied Theatre and Psychology, a combination that still makes sense when you read him now. He was part of major playwriting workshops there, had original work produced, and came under the mentorship of Lanford Wilson, who later encouraged him as he moved from plays into fiction. During college he also wrote, composed, and produced a musical with guidance from producer Stuart Ostrow. Music and story were never really separate lanes for him.

His first novel, Psychology of Want, grew out of shorter pieces he had written about college life, craving, and isolation. It was followed by bigger speculative work, including the post-apocalyptic fantasy series The Beautiful Dead and the dystopian Outlier books. Even in those early novels, you can already see the Banner pattern, characters with big feelings, high stakes, and a strong need to understand themselves before the world swallows them whole.

Then romance changed the plan.

After years of writing on the side, Banner left a long day job at a movie theater and went on tour as a pianist and performer with an original musical. Somewhere in that stretch, he had the creative pivot that reshaped his career. He began writing romance, starting with Dorm Game in 2015, and the response was strong enough to turn writing into his full-time work. That shift opened the door to the books many readers now know him for.

A lot of those books live in queer romance, especially the ones set in Texas. Football Sundae, Born Again Sinner, Wrangled, Hard for My Boss, Bromosexual, and When I See You Again show how wide his range can be even inside the same broad genre. Some are funny and flirty. Some are soft and aching. Some are a little messy in the way real people are messy. Readers tend to come to him for chemistry, heat, and that strong undercurrent of longing that runs beneath even his lighter stories.

Place matters in his work. So do outsiders.

His fictional settings, from the small-town warmth of Spruce, Texas to the darker worlds of Kissing with Teeth and The Beautiful Dead, are full of people trying to be honest about who they are. He writes athletes, artists, bad boys, sweethearts, ghosts, monsters, and boys who think they know themselves until love proves otherwise. Again and again, his books circle themes like identity, shame, desire, second chances, and the relief of finally being seen clearly.

Banner still lives in Texas, and he has kept the music side of his life active too. He has composed original soundtracks for some of his books and series, scored work in audio drama and games, and has been remixing video game music for years. That mix of theatre, psychology, music, and romance helps explain why his stories often feel both emotional and performative, in the best way. He likes feeling, he likes atmosphere, and he clearly likes characters who have to earn their way toward love.
