Published in 2017, A Simple Favor follows Stephanie, a lonely Connecticut mom blogger, after her glamorous friend Emily disappears following an ordinary school pickup. It became Bell's breakout novel, a New York Times bestseller, and later a film starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.

Instead they get isolation, strange events, and the creeping feeling that the house itself may know more about them than they know about each other.

Bell likes taking the safest-looking parts of adult life and making them feel weird.

Her 2023 novel Woman of the Year goes back to one of her favorite subjects, female friendship sharpened by envy and revenge. Lorelei and Holly were once close in college, in the same psychology seminar, before a disastrous break changed the course of Lorelei's life. Years later, with Holly now famous and being honored at a gala, Bell turns that old grievance into a tense story about obsession, status, and the stories people tell about who deserves to win.

Bell is based in Chicago and is still known for her work as a preschool teacher as well as her fiction. Her bibliography is compact, which makes it easy to see the through line.
