Danny Barrett heads to the Pacific Northwest to get inside the Danby family, a criminal clan with a century of smuggling behind it. He is soon trapped between federal pressure, family loyalties, and a psychopath bent on revenge.

Series background & context

The Danny Barrett books are crime thrillers built around a simple idea that gives the series room to move. Danny is an FBI undercover specialist, the man the bureau calls when a case has to be worked in the woods, along the water, or inside a close-knit criminal world that does not welcome strangers. Each book can land in a different part of North America, but the feel stays consistent: hard country, wary people, and danger that grows quietly before it hits.

Danny is good at disappearing.

That skill matters because he is rarely dropped into clean situations. In The Sweet Goodbye, he heads into the North Maine Woods after investigators notice that a small lumber company seems to be hiding an impossible amount of money, and after an earlier undercover agent is killed. Danny knows the terrain in a way desk-bound agents do not. Before he was a cop, he grew up in the woods of northern Michigan, and Corbett uses that background well. Danny can read people, but he can also read silence, weather, logging roads, and the way remote communities close ranks when outsiders start asking questions.

The second novel, Cape Rage, shifts the action to the Pacific Northwest, where Danny has to get inside the Danby family, a criminal clan that has ruled its stretch of coast and forest for generations. The case starts with a bank robbery and grows into something meaner. Old family loyalties, federal pressure, and a revenge-minded psychopath turn the assignment into a trap. That is a good example of how the series works. The crimes are big, but the tension often comes from family bonds, local history, and the fact that everyone involved knows the ground better than the law does.

These are wilderness thrillers, but they are also people books.

Corbett writes Danny Barrett in a clean, direct style that fits the character. Danny is capable and tough, but he is not a superhero, and the books do not lean on gadgets or flashy tradecraft. What they do lean on is mood. Weather matters. Distance matters. So do cabins, roads, shorelines, and work camps, the kind of places where one wrong decision can leave you very alone. If you like crime series that mix undercover work with noir atmosphere and strong landscape writing, that is the appeal here.

The best place to begin is The Sweet Goodbye, because it introduces Danny’s method, his restlessness, and the basic promise of the series. From there, Cape Rage shows how flexible the setup can be. Same man, same pressure, new territory each time.
