Dane Maddock Origins Books in Order

The Origins books do exactly what the title promises. They go back to Dane Maddock and Bones Bonebrake before the treasure-hunting business, when both men were still in the Navy SEALs and their partnership had not yet settled into the rhythm readers know from the main series.

That difference matters.

In these books, the friendship is still forming. The trust is not automatic. Dane and Bones can clash, irritate each other, and stumble their way toward becoming the team fans already recognize. Freedom makes that tension part of the story from the start, with the two caught in a founding-era mystery while they are still SEAL trainees. From there the series widens into hell ships, Cold War secrets, Amelia Earhart, the Amber Room, pirate treasure, and other history-heavy problems that feel very much like training for the lives they have not built yet.

The military framework changes the action. Missions begin with orders, units, and chain of command rather than salvage jobs or private quests. That makes the books a little tighter and more tactical, even when the mystery itself is pure Wood. There are still relics, conspiracies, and half-buried legends, but the young Maddock and Bones have to navigate them while wearing someone else's structure.

These stories also answer a practical reader question, how did these two become these two? Not with one giant revelation, but with repeated pressure. Shared danger, bad luck, grudging respect, then loyalty. The books understand that a partnership like theirs is built in pieces.

If you already love the main series, Origins adds context and texture. If you are new, it can also work as an entry point, especially if you like military thrillers with historical hooks.

Either way, the series shows that Dane and Bones were attracting impossible trouble long before they started billing themselves as treasure hunters.
