Canals, old industry, terraced streets, quiet parks, and bits of rough countryside all feel close enough to touch. The books are interested in what small towns remember, what they bury, and how long bad decisions keep echoing.

The tone is tense but readable. You get case papers, interviews, trial strategy, and the pressure of deadlines, but you also get proper investigation and real danger once Dan and Jayne start pulling at the wrong thread. White's background in criminal law shows in the way the books handle procedure, but the stories are never just about process. They are about doubt, loyalty, and the awkward gap between defending a client and believing one.
