From the Shadows

by Neil White

2017

Lawyer Dan Grant inherits a murder case that seems straightforward, until he and investigator Jayne Brett start asking harder questions. Their search for the truth around a dead teacher puts both of them in real danger.

2

The Darkness Around Her

by Neil White

2018

Dan Grant defends a man accused of murdering Lizzie Barnsley beside a canal, even though the evidence looks overwhelming. As he and Jayne Brett dig deeper, they find older disappearances and a predator hiding in plain sight.

3

The Innocent Ones

by Neil White

2020

A journalist is beaten to death in a playground and the obvious suspect looks impossible to defend. Dan Grant and Jayne Brett soon uncover links to child murders from the 1990s and a secret buried for decades.

Series background & context

The Dan Grant books are legal thrillers first, but they never stay politely inside the courtroom. Dan is a defence lawyer who takes cases personally. If something about the charge doesn't sit right, he digs, even when everyone around him would prefer he just prepare the brief, collect the fee, and move on.

He doesn't work alone.

His investigator is Jayne Brett, and she is one of the reasons the trilogy works so well. Jayne is sharp, resourceful, and carrying a past that never quite stays buried. Dan once defended her when she was accused of murdering her boyfriend, so their working relationship comes with history, loyalty, and a lot of unease. That unresolved backstory gives the series a constant extra charge.

The books begin with From the Shadows, where Dan inherits a murder case only weeks before trial. What looks straightforward quickly stops looking straightforward, and Dan and Jayne start pushing beyond the official version of events. The Darkness Around Her raises the stakes with a canal-side murder, older disappearances, and a client who will not tell them what he knows. In The Innocent Ones, the killing of a journalist opens onto older child murders and a conviction that may not be as settled as it seems.

These are northern legal thrillers through and through. The setting is the Lancashire hills and small cotton towns, especially the fictional Highford, and White uses that landscape well. Canals, old industry, terraced streets, quiet parks, and bits of rough countryside all feel close enough to touch. The books are interested in what small towns remember, what they bury, and how long bad decisions keep echoing.

The tone is tense but readable. You get case papers, interviews, trial strategy, and the pressure of deadlines, but you also get proper investigation and real danger once Dan and Jayne start pulling at the wrong thread. White's background in criminal law shows in the way the books handle procedure, but the stories are never just about process. They are about doubt, loyalty, and the awkward gap between defending a client and believing one.

That is the series hook.

If you like crime fiction where the law is part of the action rather than background scenery, this trilogy is a strong place to start with Neil White. Read From the Shadows, then The Darkness Around Her, then The Innocent Ones. The cases are satisfying on their own, but the deeper pull is the partnership at the center, two damaged people trying to do honest work in messy circumstances.
