His working relationship with DS Noble helps balance the books, because Noble often provides the steadier, more grounded counterweight to Brook's intensity.

Setting matters here too. Derby and the surrounding area are not just wallpaper. The books use suburbs, estates, student life, riverbanks, quiet houses, village edges, and the nearby pull of the Peak District to create a grounded sense of place. These are not glamorous crime scenes. They are ordinary English spaces made suddenly dangerous, which gives the series a strong undercurrent of realism even when the plots become intricate and deeply unsettling.

As the series goes on, the cases widen without losing that grounded feel. Deity mixes a mutilated body with missing students and an ominous online trail. The Unquiet Grave brings cold cases, a missing teenage boy, and the stink of buried corruption. A Killing Moon turns a disappearance into a larger pattern of vulnerable young women going missing. Death Do Us Part opens with carefully staged double murders that look almost ceremonial. Across all of them, Dunne likes layered investigations, false starts, and the point where private pain and public violence meet.

These books are best for readers who want crime fiction with weight to it. They are tense, knotty, and often emotionally bruising, but they are also deeply readable. Some later entries can stand alone, yet Brook's history matters enough that publication order is the best route.
