Infinite Reality

by Peter Meredith

2017

FBI agent Daniel Roan enters the world's biggest online game to investigate deaths tied to its hidden creator. He is a complete outsider in Daggerland, and that makes every quest, fight, and alliance more dangerous.

Series background & context

Daggerland Online is Meredith taking his thriller instincts into LitRPG territory. Instead of a plague-ravaged America or a hidden fantasy kingdom, the hook here is the world's biggest online game and the very real danger growing around it.

The main character is Daniel Roan, an FBI agent who is almost the opposite of a natural gamer. That reluctance is part of the fun. In Infinite Reality, Roan is pulled into Daggerland because suspicious deaths seem tied to the game and to the mind behind it. He is suddenly operating in a world where experienced players know the rules, the slang, the shortcuts, and the social codes, while he is still trying to figure out how not to embarrass himself. Meredith plays that fish-out-of-water angle well, and it keeps the series grounded even when the game mechanics get bigger.

The two-world setup is the real engine.

A lot of game-world fiction stays inside the game, but Meredith keeps the real-world stakes close. What happens in Daggerland matters because it bleeds outward into investigations, violence, and organized schemes that affect living people. That lets the books work both as fantasy adventures and as modern thrillers. Roan is leveling up, fighting, and learning how to move through a dangerous virtual landscape, but he is also chasing a case.

By Infinite Assassins, the pressure sharpens. Atticus Arching's followers use the game and its players in lethal ways, and Roan has to go deeper undercover to fight back. The title tells you a lot about the series' tone at that point. Meredith is not writing a cozy game story about loot and banter. He is interested in infiltration, radicalization, moral compromise, and the question of what happens when a decent man has to act like something much colder in order to stop a larger threat.

That is why the books feel a little different from a lot of LitRPG. Yes, there are classes, combat, and progression, but the spine is still basically a suspense story. Roan is always under pressure. He is learning systems on the fly, trying to judge who is playing a role and who is actually dangerous, and coping with the fact that the rules of Daggerland can be manipulated by people with real agendas.

If you want Meredith but do not want zombies, this is a good side door into his work. It still has his pace, his taste for trouble, and his focus on characters who get thrown into situations they are not ready for. It just swaps collapsing cities and undead hordes for online kingdoms, game politics, and a case that keeps getting stranger the longer Roan stays logged in.
