Series background & context
Cyrus Drake pairs a military operator with an FBI investigator to solve murders in places where an ordinary investigation cannot proceed safely. Jack Mars introduces Drake as a retiring Marine sniper whose tactical experience makes him useful to a newly created FBI team. His partner, Agent Phoebe Colt, brings investigative skills to the same assignment. Together, they must work out who killed a victim while surviving the people and organizations that would rather the questions stopped.
Finding the truth and staying alive become parts of the same job.
In Ghost Unit, the death of a Navy SEAL draws them to Manila. The victim has no recorded mission explaining his presence, so even establishing what he was doing becomes part of the inquiry. Their investigation leads toward a syndicate that threatens anyone who might become a witness. The case gives the partnership a clear purpose: Colt needs room to examine evidence and connect facts, while Drake's field skills help them function in an environment where asking the next question may provoke immediate violence.
Ghost Target sends them to Beirut after a retired Army cryptographer is killed with a carefully placed shot. The circumstances suggest more than an isolated murder. Investigating what she knew brings Drake and Colt toward people with political power and interests tied to corruption and weapons. The city contains competing factions, making a simple division between helpful authorities and criminal suspects difficult to assume. The partners have to pursue the victim's hidden information while working through an environment shaped by agendas they cannot take at face value.
The series' continuing structure comes from combining two types of story. There is a mystery to explain, with a victim, concealed motives, and information someone is trying to suppress. There is also the practical danger of conducting that inquiry in a military hotspot. Drake and Colt's different strengths address those pressures together. The attraction of the premise is watching an investigator and a sniper approach the same problem without assuming that either deduction or force can finish the work alone.
Begin with Ghost Unit, followed by Ghost Target and the later numbered books. The changing locations give each investigation its own setting, while the partnership supplies continuity. Expect murder mysteries with military action and international criminal networks, rather than cases confined to a police interview room. The books focus on the difficulty of identifying a killer when that search threatens organizations able to strike back. Drake and Colt must bring both methods of working to bear, using what they can learn to decide where the next danger is coming from and what it may conceal.
