Cynthia Kuhn Books in Order

Cynthia Kuhn is originally from upstate New York, and books seem to have been part of daily life from the start. She has said she grew up an only child, often tagging along on her professor parents’ research trips, and those long stretches of travel helped turn reading and writing into habits she never really lost.

Books were part of the furniture.

Long before she published mystery novels, she was writing in other forms. Her first publication was a poem in the 1990s, and over the years her work appeared in places such as McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, Literary Mama, Copper Nickel, and Prick of the Spindle. She also built a scholarly career, writing or co-editing books including Self-Fashioning in Margaret Atwood’s Fiction, Styling Texts, and Reading Chuck Palahniuk. That academic side of her life never went away. Kuhn earned degrees in English from the University of Kansas, the University of Colorado-Denver, and the University of Denver, and she now teaches literature, writing, and film as a professor of English at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The jump to mysteries came later. Kuhn has said she began writing mysteries in 2011, after years of writing fiction, essays, poetry, and criticism, and the move makes sense when you look at what she loved as a reader. She grew up reading Elizabeth Peters, and you can feel that fondness for smart, traditional mysteries in her own work.

Her best-known books follow English professor Lila Maclean, who keeps finding murder where committee meetings and course schedules ought to be enough drama. The Semester of Our Discontent introduced Lila and won the Agatha Award for Best First Novel, while later books like The Art of Vanishing, The Spirit in Question, and The Study of Secrets leaned further into campus politics, literary puzzles, and offbeat settings.

She clearly knows how faculty politics can become motive.

Readers who like Kuhn’s work often seem to come for the bookish atmosphere and stay for the mix of humor, suspicion, and everyday pressure. Her mysteries tend to be full of professors, writers, artists, event planners, and people who notice words for a living, which gives the stories a sharp but friendly texture. Even when the plots get complicated, the tone usually stays warm and readable.

She later opened a second lane in her fiction with the Starlit Bookshop Mysteries, beginning with How to Book a Murder. That series shifts from campus corridors to a family bookstore in Colorado, where Emma Starrs juggles literary events, money worries, small-town grudges, and sudden deaths. In the Event of Murder keeps that same blend of books, community, and trouble.

Short fiction is part of the picture too. Her stories The Blue Ribbon and There Comes a Time were both Agatha Award nominees, which says a lot about how well she can work in a smaller space without losing the puzzle or the mood. These days, she lives in Colorado with her family and keeps one foot in the classroom and the other in the mystery world. It turns out those two places are not all that far apart.
