Author bio
Curt Wendelboe began writing as a child in Mitchell, South Dakota, but fiction had to wait while the rest of life happened first. After the Marines sent him to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, he came home and entered law enforcement, the start of a career that would last 38 years.
He also started writing short stories not long after leaving the Marines in 1972.
In the 1970s he worked in South Dakota towns near Indian reservations, and later he built most of his law enforcement life in Wyoming. He has said that, out of all the jobs he held, he felt proudest of working the street. By the time he retired as a sheriff's deputy and patrol supervisor in Gillette, he had spent decades seeing how cases really move, how people talk under pressure, and how small communities carry old trouble for years.
That background runs through his fiction in a very plain, useful way. His books know procedure, but they also know weather, distance, silence, and the way a town can close ranks. Pine Ridge, the Badlands, Cheyenne, Wind River, and the Black Hills are not just scenery in his novels. They shape the people in them.
His breakout novel was Death Along the Spirit Road, published in 2011. It introduced Lakota FBI agent Manny Tanno, a lawman pulled back toward Pine Ridge and the past he thought he had left behind. Readers who stick with that series through Death Where the Bad Rocks Live, Death on the Greasy Grass, and the later books tend to like the mix of murder investigation, reservation history, and the steady pressure of old secrets coming back around.
He did not stop there.
Wendelboe has also written the Bitter Wind mysteries, which follow retired detective Arn Anderson in and around Cheyenne. Books like Hunting the Five Point Killer and Hunting the VA Slayer lean more contemporary and more hard edged, but they still carry the same feel for working cops, stubborn investigators, and places where trouble never stays neatly contained. In another direction, The Marshal and the Moonshiner and the Nelson Lane books move into Depression-era frontier crime. Then there are the Tucker Ashley westerns, including Backed to the Wall, which head straight into gold camps, posses, and rough country.
Across all of those books, a few things repeat. He likes lawmen who are tired but stubborn, cases with roots in older history, and landscapes that can turn mean in a hurry. He writes about people trying to do decent work in places where the rules are thin, the weather is worse, and nobody forgets a grudge.
That makes his catalog easy to enter from a few different directions. If you want reservation-set mysteries with a strong sense of history, start with Manny Tanno. If you want cold cases and serial-killer tension, go with Arn Anderson. If you want a tougher historical mystery, Nelson Lane is a good bet. And if you want a straight Western ride, Tucker Ashley is waiting.
Now based in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Wendelboe lives with his wife, Heather, and writes from home. The path from Marine to patrol supervisor to novelist turned out to make a pretty solid writing life.
