The tension has more bite. Attraction is tangled up with fear, loyalty, and the possibility that getting what you want may destroy the life you have been trying to protect.

The setting is contemporary, but the paranormal angle pushes it toward suspense romance. Detectives, hidden histories, soulmate logic, and supernatural consequences all matter. So does emotional restraint. The people in these books want badly, but they usually have reasons for holding back, and those reasons are not small. That slow pressure gives the series a different feel from Mathewson's lighter work.
