Black Heart

by RL Mathewson

2013

Marty cannot stop loving Tristan Black, the man who has always held himself apart from her. When the truth about his secret starts surfacing, desire and danger close in at the same time.

Series background & context

The Cursed Hearts series sits close to Pyte/Sentinel, but it has its own mood. The books lean harder into secrecy, suspense, and the feeling that something dangerous is moving just beneath the surface of ordinary life. The romance is still central, but there is more dread in the air, more mystery around what characters are hiding, and more sense that love here may come with a real cost.

That shape is clear in Black Heart. Marty and Detective Tristan Black are pulled together by years of feeling, history, and unfinished business, but the relationship never exists on its own. Tristan is hiding something big, Marty knows enough to feel the danger without fully understanding it, and the truth threatening them is not just personal. It feels like part of a larger curse or supernatural trap waiting to tighten.

That twist is the series identity.

Compared with the broader family sprawl of Pyte/Sentinel, Cursed Hearts feels more intimate and more haunted. The focus stays tight on the central couple and the question of what can survive once the secret is out. There is still humor, because this is Mathewson, but it comes in smaller doses. The tension has more bite. Attraction is tangled up with fear, loyalty, and the possibility that getting what you want may destroy the life you have been trying to protect.

The setting is contemporary, but the paranormal angle pushes it toward suspense romance. Detectives, hidden histories, soulmate logic, and supernatural consequences all matter. So does emotional restraint. The people in these books want badly, but they usually have reasons for holding back, and those reasons are not small. That slow pressure gives the series a different feel from Mathewson's lighter work.

If you want paranormal romance with more mystery and a darker edge, Cursed Hearts is the lane to try. It still cares about tenderness and happy endings, but it reaches them through secrecy, danger, and the sense that loving the right person may also mean surviving the worst truth of your life.
