Ruthless Rival

by LJ Shen

2022

As a girl, heiress Arya Roth fell for her housekeeper’s son, only to lose him after one stolen kiss exploded into scandal. Decades later she clashes in court with suave attorney Christian Miller, unaware he is the same boy now back to ruin her father.

Series background & context

Cruel Castaways is L.J. Shen's contemporary romance series about men whose wealth and confidence don't protect them from unresolved hurt. Each book centers on a different relationship, bringing hostility, secrets or an arrangement of convenience into contact with feelings the characters cannot easily control. The stories move through professional and social worlds where status matters, but the people involved still have to decide whether trusting someone is worth the risk.

Ruthless Rival begins with a connection formed long before either character has an established career. Arya Roth falls for the son of her family's housekeeper, only for events after their first kiss to remove him from her life. Years later, she is a publicist defending her father's reputation against an accusation. The lawyer opposing him is Christian Miller, and Arya doesn't know he is the boy she once loved. Christian's ambition and desire for revenge put him on a collision course with the woman who still matters to him.

Their attraction makes the conflict harder to keep purely professional.

In Fallen Foe, Arsène Corbin's plans are disrupted by the sudden death of his fiancée. He has not approached marriage as a matter of love, and losing her leaves more than grief to untangle. Winnifred Ashcroft, an actress who wins a role at his theater, knows things about the dead woman that complicate his understanding of the past. Arsène and Winnie dislike each other, but working around the theater gives them room to discover something beyond that first hostility. Their story connects attraction to the aftermath of tragedy and betrayal.

Cold Hearted Casanova shifts to Riggs Bates, a billionaire who keeps his fortune out of sight and avoids a settled romantic life. His story involves a fake marriage, giving the series another version of a relationship that begins under conditions intended to limit emotional involvement. Across the books, characters try to manage love as if it can be kept subordinate to revenge, ambition or a practical agreement. The complication is that knowing more about another person can undermine the rules they thought would keep them safe.

The tone combines sexual tension, sharp exchanges and emotionally difficult pasts. These are connected romances with individual couples at their center, rather than one relationship stretched across the full series. Start with Ruthless Rival, followed by Fallen Foe and Cold Hearted Casanova, to read in publication order. The opening book introduces the blend of long-held resentment and attraction that gives the series its character, while the later novels explore different ways that guarded people can become attached to someone they did not intend to need.
