Series background & context
The Crossbreed series is built around Raven Black, a rogue who lives in the cracks of the supernatural world. She is half Mage and half Vampire, which means she belongs everywhere and nowhere at the same time. When she joins Keystone, a covert group that hunts dangerous criminals, she finally has a shot at structure and purpose. The downside is her new partner, Christian Poe, a polished Vampire she would happily argue with, stab, or kiss, depending on the day.
That push and pull powers the whole series.
Set largely in Cognito, the same hidden city introduced in the Mageri books, Crossbreed blends paranormal romance with case-by-case urban fantasy. Each installment throws Raven and the Keystone team into a new mess. Serial killers. Traffickers. Political plots. Dark magic. Missing people. Assassination attempts. Sometimes the threat is street level. Sometimes it reaches into the highest parts of Breed power. Either way, the team has to move fast, and mistakes tend to cost blood.
Raven is the reason the books feel sharper than a standard detective setup. She is not a clean hero. She has survival habits, anger, old trauma, and a streak of vigilante thinking that never fully disappears. Joining Keystone does not magically smooth those edges away. Instead, the series keeps asking whether she can build trust without losing the ferocity that kept her alive. Christian, for his part, is not just a love interest. He is a provocation, an ally, a secret-keeper, and often the person best able to call Raven on her worst instincts.
Keystone itself becomes a found family, and that matters more with each book. The team banters, clashes, covers for one another, and drags their personal histories into the workplace. Dark uses those bonds well. Even when the plot turns into a hunt, a trap, or a magical emergency, the emotional tension stays close to the surface. You are never far from a loyalty test.
Readers should expect a darker mood than Seven. The romance is slower, the world is more morally muddy, and the criminal underworld is much more visible. But it is not bleak for the sake of being bleak. There is humor, swagger, and a real sense of momentum, especially once the larger arc starts tightening around Raven's past, Christian's secrets, and the power struggles shaping the Breed world.
This series also sits deep inside the wider Mageriverse. Familiar faces from Mageri turn up, especially Christian Poe, and the timeline follows that earlier sequence. Still, Crossbreed explains its own rules well enough that new readers can start here if investigative fantasy and slow-burn vampire romance are what grab them.
In short, this is where Dark gets sharper, meaner, and more procedural, without losing the emotional pull that defines her work.
