That does not mean the books abandon character for creature lore. Smoak still writes toward emotional pull first. The world feels darker and more feral than her other series, but not so dense that you need pages of explanation before the story starts. The books seem happiest when they let the supernatural mystery sharpen the romance instead of overwhelming it.
