Author bio
Cressida Cowell is a British children's author and illustrator whose stories about Vikings, wizards, and stubborn toys have found readers all over the world. She was born in London in April 1966 and grew up between the city and a tiny, uninhabited island off the west coast of Scotland.
On that island there was no electricity, no roads, and no television, so her childhood summers were spent fishing for supper, exploring cliffs and caves, and drawing by candlelight. She has often said that those wild holidays, and the feeling that there might be dragons just out of sight, planted the seeds for the world of How to Train Your Dragon.
Back in London she went through school, eventually studying English at Keble College, Oxford. After university she trained in art and illustration at Saint Martin's School of Art and at Brighton University, learning how to tell stories with pictures as well as words. Her graduation project became her first published picture book, Little Bo Peep’s Library Book, which turns a familiar nursery rhyme into a celebration of libraries and reading.
Through the late 1990s and early 2000s she wrote and illustrated a string of picture books for very young children, including What Shall We Do with the Boo Hoo Baby?, Hiccup the Viking Who Was Seasick, One Too Many Tigers, and Claydon Was a Clingy Child. These books already show the things readers now associate with her work, energetic line drawings, big feelings handled with humour, and a deep respect for how seriously children take their imaginations.
In 2003 she published the first How to Train Your Dragon novel, introducing Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, a small, thoughtful Viking boy trying to survive dragon training and live up to his tribe’s idea of a hero. The twelve-book series, finished in 2015, follows Hiccup and his dragon Toothless from chaotic lessons on the Isle of Berk to a struggle over the future of humans and dragons. The books have sold millions of copies, been translated into many languages, and inspired an animated film and television franchise, but on the page they remain a very personal story about courage, empathy, and growing up the hard way.
After Hiccup’s story was complete, Cowell moved to a different kind of magic with The Wizards of Once, a quartet of novels set in an ancient forest where wizards and warriors are meant to be enemies. Their two misfit heroes, Xar and Wish, break rules, befriend forbidden creatures, and question the stories they have been told about each other. More recently she has started the Which Way to Anywhere series, a space hopping adventure about the blended O’Hero-Smith family, where secret Gifts, dangerous portals, and sibling rivalry all tangle together.
Alongside these longer fantasies, she has kept returning to picture books. The Emily Brown stories, created with illustrator Neal Layton, follow a fearless girl and her toy rabbit Stanley on adventures that tackle everything from overprotective parents to sleepless monsters and homesick Father Christmas. She has also written playful interactive books such as the Super Sue titles, and gentle stories about clingy children, noisy babies, and troublesome sheep that are designed to be read aloud.
Cowell is as interested in real children’s lives as in imaginary worlds. From 2019 to 2022 she served as Waterstones Children’s Laureate in the United Kingdom, using the role to talk about the importance of school libraries, free reading time, and giving every child access to books they actually enjoy. She supports organisations that champion literacy and the environment, and has been recognised with honours including an MBE for services to children’s literature and a fellowship of the Royal Society of Literature.
She still lives in west London, in Hammersmith, with her husband Simon Cowell, their three children, and a much loved dog. Many of her drafts begin life in a quiet shed at the bottom of the garden, just as her childhood stories began in a small stone house on a Scottish island. Whether she is writing about Vikings, wizards, space travelling families, or small children who will not give up their favourite toy, her books keep returning to the same ideas, that bravery can look very different from the outside, that reading is its own kind of magic, and that young people often see the world more clearly than the adults around them.
