Series background & context

The Cozy Mountain Mysteries take place in a fictional West Virginia resort town where elegant old homes, tourist money, local loyalties, and long memories make a complicated mix. The series begins with A Ghost on Cozy Mountain, but it soon becomes a continuing story about friendship, reinvention, romance, and the risks hidden behind a polished mountain-town image.

At its heart are Emma Prescott and Abby MacIntosh, long-time best friends whose relationship has helped both women through difficult years. Emma is decisive and used to carrying responsibility. Abby has spent much of her life feeling overlooked, but gradually finds more confidence and a larger role in the community. Their friendship is tested, repaired, and strengthened as the books go on.

Georgie Shreckengost is another key part of the group. He brings humor, strong opinions, practical help, and plenty of personality to their efforts. Around them are former partners, family members, guests, neighbors, staff, and old acquaintances, all with their own ties to Cozy Mountain and its past.

The resort is lovely. The power struggles are not.

In the first book, wealthy socialite Blythe Buffington returns home while facing pressure from family members and people who want control of her property. Her sudden disappearance draws Emma, Abby, and Georgie into the mystery. From there, the series follows Emma's plan to turn an inherited Victorian mansion into the Queen of Cozy Mountain Bed and Breakfast, a project that creates fresh opportunities for gossip, conflict, and danger.

The mansion gives the books a lively home base. It has antiques, guests, renovation problems, and a few ghosts that are more troublesome than comforting. Emma has to build a business while dealing with old relationships and the demands of people who assume they have a right to tell her what to do. Abby also faces major changes in work and love, while Georgie pursues his own ambitious projects.

Each installment has a mystery, whether it involves a suspicious death, a vanished guest, a blackmailer, an old secret, or troubling discoveries on a renovation site. The larger story is continuous, though. The characters' personal choices and changing friendships carry forward from one book to the next, so the series works best in order even as each volume supplies enough context for a new reader.

The mood is cozy, funny, and sometimes a bit spooky. Grandstaff uses the mountain setting to explore the tension between resort wealth and the residents who depend on it, resent it, or both. Start with A Ghost on Cozy Mountain to meet the central group and see why this town's handsome houses and scenic views come with so much baggage.
