Coyote Run Books in Order

The Coyote Run books center on Maddie Whitney, known around town as Mad Girl, a dog rehabilitator in rural Northern California who understands animals far better than she understands most people. Maddie is brilliant, blunt, funny in a sideways way, and not built for smooth small talk. When crime lands on her doorstep, she gets pulled into investigations she would gladly avoid, if not for the dogs and the people she feels compelled to protect.

This is a mystery series where the dogs are never just background.

Coyote Run itself is a big part of the appeal. The town is full of ranch land, drought, storms, gossip, old injuries, and the kind of local history everyone thinks they already know. Search and rescue work, animal training, and the physical landscape all matter to the plots. These books do not treat dogs as cute props. The working dogs, rescued dogs, and damaged dogs shape the action and often reveal what people are trying hardest to hide.

Starting with The Dog Thief, Maddie is drawn into a murder case and an uneasy partnership with Sheriff Oliver Desjardins. In Mad Dog Down the Road, Howl Like the Wind, and Deadman's Dance, the stakes keep widening. There are suspicious accidents, public killings, family secrets, violent criminals, and local grudges that refuse to stay buried. At the same time, Maddie is slowly building something like a community around herself, including the Midnight Runners K-9 search and rescue team.

Every case is also a test of whether Maddie can let other people in.

The tone mixes tension with dry humor and a lot of heart. Maddie can be prickly, stubborn, and painfully awkward, but that is exactly why the series works. Acosta lets her stay complicated. The books care about loneliness, trust, damaged families, and the ways people and animals learn to heal without turning sentimental. If you want a sleek puzzle mystery, this is not quite that. If you want sharp small town crime stories with a memorable heroine, strong dog knowledge, and a real sense of place, Coyote Run is a very good bet.
