Series background & context

The title tells you what this series is doing. Courting the Unconventional is Laura Beers giving center stage to heroines who do not fit comfortably inside Regency expectations, and often have no interest in trying. These women investigate, sneak, question, publish, resist, and generally cause problems for the men who underestimate them.

That does not mean the series abandons romance. Far from it. It means the romantic tension usually grows out of conflict between independence and attachment. A heroine wants answers more than safety. A hero wants order more than emotional risk. Then the plot traps them in the same space and makes both positions harder to keep.

The books make that pattern feel fresh in different ways. One heroine robs a coach while chasing the truth about her stepfather. Another disguises herself to attend an Oxford lecture. Another is the secret wife of a war hero who does not remember her. Another writes for the Society pages while pretending to be the perfect diamond. There are also scandal-shadowed women, reluctant heirs, and agents whose orderly plans do not survive contact with the person they are supposed to avoid.

It is a lively series.

What links the books is not just tone but a shared world. Families overlap. Earlier characters reappear. Aunts meddle. Reputation matters. So do secrets. The stories are lighter on espionage than some of Beers' other work, but there is still plenty of mystery and danger moving under the romance.

Readers should expect witty friction, unusual setups, and heroines who are rarely waiting to be rescued. Even when a hero steps in to help, the books usually make room for the woman to remain active in solving the problem. That gives the romances a useful spark. The attraction feels earned because both people have to adjust.

If you like your Regency romance with smart women, odd predicaments, and a little more mischief than decorum, Courting the Unconventional is likely to be one of Laura Beers' most appealing series.
