Series background & context

The Copper Star books are Suzanne Woods Fisher at her most openly historical. This is a two-book story set during World War II and its aftermath, and it follows one woman whose past refuses to stay in the past.

At the center is Louisa, a young woman smuggled out of Nazi Germany after working in the resistance. She lands in Copper Springs, Arizona, a dusty copper-mining town that feels safer than Europe, but not exactly simple. She is sponsored by Reverend Robert Gordon, a kind man carrying his own grief and secrets, and the uneasy peace of the town does not last long.

That is the shape of the series, really.

These books mix romance with danger, faith, and the long reach of war. Louisa is not starting from zero. She is trying to build a life while fear, loss, and old enemies keep closing in. The Arizona setting matters because it gives the story a frontier feel, all heat, distance, and suspicion, while still being tied to world events far away. In Copper Fire, the story widens again as Louisa faces postwar Germany, family duty, and the emotional wreckage left behind.

If you mostly know Fisher through her Amish fiction, this series feels a little different in pace and scale. It is more overtly suspenseful, more international, and more shaped by the moral pressure of wartime choices. But it still has the things she returns to again and again, people under strain, hard-won trust, and faith that has to survive contact with real life.

Because there are only two books, the reading order is easy. Start with Copper Star and go straight into Copper Fire. They work best as one continuous arc, with the second book deepening everything the first one sets in motion.
