Control Books in Order

Control is a YA science fiction duology, but its first hook is grief. In 2150, the law says human DNA must stay pure. Genetic alterations exist anyway, and people with the wrong changes are treated as mistakes, hidden away, or marked for death.

That world hits Zelia Benten all at once. After her father dies violently, her younger sister Dylia is taken during an abduction at a foster agency, and Zel learns that the loss of her family is tied to a much larger secret. She is pushed into an underground foster home full of teens whose bodies have been altered in ways society refuses to accept. What looks like a refuge is also a hiding place.

Nobody here is supposed to exist.

That is where Lydia Kang finds the series' real energy. The outcast kids around Zel are strange, funny, angry, loyal, and badly used to being feared. Some have visible differences, some have abilities that feel half medical and half impossible, and all of them know the outside world has already judged them. The books get a lot of mileage out of that contrast. Officially these teens are aberrations. On the page they feel like vulnerable kids building a rough version of family wherever they can.

There is also a strong adventure engine. Zel wants Dylia back, and that clear goal keeps Control moving through kidnappings, secret labs, future drugs, underground shelters, and shifting alliances. Cy, the boy who becomes important to her, brings a romance thread, but the emotional center stays with family and trust. Kang's medical background gives the speculative science enough detail to feel unsettling without burying the story in explanation.

Catalyst widens the world without losing the personal stakes. Zel, Dylia, and the others are forced onto the run when their safe house is attacked, and the search for safety turns into a search for answers about Cy, their mutations, and the system that made them targets in the first place. The pace stays quick, but the questions get bigger.

What does it mean to be human when the law has already decided you are not?

If you like dystopian YA with found family, strange science, and a real streak of compassion for misfits, this duology is easy to click with. Expect future-tech thrills and a few sharp twists, but also expect characters who are terrified, hopeful, and trying to protect one another. For all its gene mods and neural weapons, Control stays focused on kids fighting to be seen as people.
