Series background & context

This page covers Tyler Neish's early days, before he became one of the most beloved members of Jack Logan's wider team. First Among the Dead is a prequel novella set in Inverness in December 2015, when Tyler is fresh out of training and trying very hard to look more competent than he feels.

That is harder than it sounds.

Readers of the main Logan books already know Tyler as anxious, eager, and often accidentally funny, but the novella shows where that version of him began. When sixteen-year-old Laura Wilder goes missing, the case hits close to home. Senior officers treat it as routine. Tyler does not. He knows something is wrong, and the story turns on whether a rookie constable with almost no power can make anybody listen.

Because it is a shorter work, the novella stays tight. It focuses on one early case, one cold Highland winter, and one young copper trying to do the right thing before the system closes around him. That makes it a nice entry point for readers who want a taste of the Logan universe without committing to a full novel, and a rewarding extra for long-time fans who want more of Tyler.

The tone still matches the wider series, tense when it needs to be, but with a clear streak of humor and affection for its characters. So if Tyler has always been your favorite source of nerves, loyalty, and accidental chaos, this is the book that lets you see him at the start.
