Series background & context

Lara Lacombe's entry in The Coltons of Mustang Valley is a second-chance romance wrapped around legal trouble, a covert investigation, and one of the Colton family's many ongoing crises. Like the other books in this shared continuity, it follows a new couple while continuing a broader story of secrets, questions of identity, and danger inside a wealthy Texas family.

Nothing around the Coltons stays simple for long.

In Colton's Undercover Reunion, Ainsley Colton is a corporate attorney trying to help her family through a serious legal problem. When her relative Ace is arrested after evidence appears to tie him to a shooting, Ainsley turns to Santiago Morales, the former love she has never quite put behind her. Santiago is an accomplished defense lawyer, but agreeing to help comes with a request of his own.

Santiago suspects that a marriage-counseling retreat is running a harmful scam. To learn what is happening, he and Ainsley pose as a married couple in trouble. It is a practical cover story that becomes emotionally messy very quickly. They have history, unresolved hurt, and a convincing fake marriage to perform while trying to find proof that can expose the people behind the scheme.

Pretending is easier than being honest.

The book works on two levels. Ainsley and Santiago investigate the retreat and deal with the danger it creates, while also reconsidering why their earlier relationship ended. Both are trained to argue a case and hold their ground, which makes their reunion lively as well as vulnerable. They know how to make a logical case. Saying what they want is much harder.

The Mustang Valley continuity includes a larger Colton mystery involving the family's past and a violent attack on patriarch Payne Colton. Lacombe's novel adds legal pressure and new clues without requiring readers to know every earlier installment. The central relationship and undercover case are complete within the book.

Expect a fast, close-quarters story with an investigation that forces two exes to act like a couple before they are ready to face what they still feel. For readers following the whole series, it is book nine. For readers looking for a standalone Colton story, it offers a clear entry point with a strong second-chance setup.
